He is also a published author, fitness model, and human rights activist. Ben shares the story of how he got started working in talk radio in Minneapolis then continuing to work in radio and television upon moving to L.A. After a controversial exit as the on-camera host for EXTRA, he started doing voice over work and never looked back. Ben talks about auditioning and some things he has learned over the years like showing respect for every word on the page and knowing whom you are talking to in every story. Ben shares that his experience as a writer helps him fill in the blanks if he doesn’t have all the information for a promo or trailer read. He stresses the importance of giving “the creatives” what they want and being patient especially in commercial sessions that can require dozens of takes versus promo and trailer sessions that can last a matter of minutes. Ben reflects on what has helped him have such a long career that include nurturing his professional relationships.
Ben is also able to ride the ups and downs in his career, going above and beyond for his clients and realizing that as a performer he cannot have “bad days”. He talks about where his skills have come from over the years from comedy and acting classes and coaches like Joni Gerber and mentor, Don LaFontaine. Ben has started to coach select actors via Skype or Phone Patch, when he is available, helping them find their authentic sound and staying grounded and real. He reveals his journey overcoming drug and alcohol use and talks about the effects it had on his voice work. Now sober, he encourages people watching to find balance, be present to their creativity and live a healthy life.

Season 6 of VO Buzz Weekly continues with Chuck and Stacey’s conversation with the multi-talented actor, Nolan North, beloved for his hundreds of video game and animation voice over credits like Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, Deadpool, Destiny, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty, Young Justice, Home, Blaze and the Monster Machines and on camera work like in Pretty Little Liars, Big Love, Port Charles and more.
Nolan discusses the types of characters he likes to play and demonstrates the ways he “plays in the vocal sandbox” to create new voices from adding an accent to doing a bad impression of a celebrity. He talks about the new mobile gaming project, created by Alan Tudyk, that he acts and produces on called Con Man: The Game. It’s a free game to download and is perfect for super fans and cosplayers who want to literally be a part of the game, so check it out.
Nolan answers how he prefers to approach auditions by using the given artwork for inspiration and showing his range to play other characters in an alternate take. He offers advice to those wanting to become a professional actor to work in large regional markets first to meet directors and build your skills and resume. Without any regrets, he thinks about what he would do differently if he were starting his career over, defines what being successful means to him and reminds fellow performers to enjoy the journey of the business and embrace the chaos of it.
He gives his perspective to following your dreams no matter if someone tells you it’s impossible. And he adds that if you can be talked out of pursuing something, it might be a blessing in disguise because if it was your true passion you would be unwavering in going after it. He talks about his career desires in five or ten years and what motivates him to keep working and challenging himself. He reflects on how much he loves the people in the voice over business and how grateful he is for his family who have stood by him through all the good times and tough times in his career.

Chuck and Stacey are honored to welcome teaching and voice over casting icons, Harvey and Cathy Kalmenson to the show. Since 1993, they have been casting and directing radio and TV commercials, animation, audiobooks and video games and are the creators of The famous Kalmenson Method, the highly respected voice over acting teaching program.
Originally from Chicago, Cathy shares her background working in talent payment at Leo Burnett Advertising in Chicago then at Abrams Rubiloff in Los Angeles. She would then go on to agenting at Tisherman Agency and in the celebrity division at Special Artists. Her love for casting was discovered at The Voicecaster and would lead her and Harvey to form Kalmenson and Kalmenson in 1993 that to date boasts a database of more than 28,000 talented voice over actors.
Harvey explains the origin of his popular nickname “Da Harv” and how his background in legit theatre and stage managing led him to accept a job voice directing at Abrams Rubiloff where he met his future wife and business partner, Cathy. Harvey expresses his passion for voice over actors to be method actors and the importance of knowing “why” they are saying the words on the page.
The two talk about what keeps them inspired to be a part of the voice over business and Chuck and Stacey sing the praises of the Kalmenson’s for their amazing industry contributions in casting and teaching. Cathy speaks to some of the current commercial trends that include being truthful, vulnerable and authentic.
They talk about what talent buyers and producers are wanting from voice over talent and the ways they rely on Harvey and Cathy to think outside the box and find them who they want for their projects. They are adept at translating writer’s speak into agent’s speak and then into actor’s speak so they can capture the essence of the copy.
Harvey talks about the importance of improvisation in life and in acting. He encourages talent to not throw away their craft when doing commercials and be responsive to what is happening. He adds that directing commercials is some of the most difficult work to do.
